Admission to hospital only when necessary
Principle: As much health care and disability support as possible should be provided in the home and community. When children and young people are admitted to hospital, this should be as close to home as possible within the bounds of quality and safety.
As many health and disability support services as possible should be provided to your child or young person in the home and in the community. On the other hand, while travel can mean considerable stress, inconvenience, cost and disruption to a family, it is sometimes necessary for the best care of the child.
For some services, children will have to travel to another centre. This is because some services are so specialised that there is a need for a smaller number of them. If your child does have to travel, you are entitled to go with them.
