Ways you can tell if your baby is getting enough milk include pooing every day, lots of wet nappies and of course your baby's growth and weight. Your baby's Well Child Tamariki Ora Health Record includes graphs with your baby's weight and growth. Remember your baby does not need to finish the whole bottle of formula each time.

Look she's just not forming a seal at the moment because she's not really interested in feeding.

And it's really good; she may be telling you that she's actually completed her feed because they don't always have to finish a bottle. People think they make a certain amount; let's not waste it but she'll let you know when she's had enough and I think that that's what she's told you now.

Dad

OK.

Actually you feed as they want it rather than you pushing it and making them finish the bottle which is not a good idea.

Dad

Oh OK.

Lactation consultant

We feed babies cue-based these days so we let them tell us how much they're wanting and if she's pushing it away she's telling you "I've had enough".

[Baby sounds]

Dad

Oh you smiling now.

Your midwife or Well Child nurse will help you to recognise these signs, and make sure your baby is feeding effectively. Your baby will need to feed regularly at night, so you may have to get up a few times a night to feed them. There is no difference in sleeping patterns between bottle fed and breastfed babies.
