And what made you know he was ready to start solids?

Mum 1

Oh he's open his mouth and just try to feed ... look at when I ... we eating.

Plunket clinical advisor

When you were eating ... mmm ... mmm. And I noticed him before, he was sort of lunging forward for the food when you offered him the spoon.

Mum 1

Plunket clinical advisor

Start with spoon-fed pureed foods when your baby's ready at around six months. Move onto mashed and chopped foods over the next few months.

Offer finger foods from 7-8 months when your baby's able to pick them up, bring them to their mouth and chew them. Add textures, varieties, flavours and quantities of food as your baby grows. By the time your baby's 12 months old, they're ready to eat small amounts of many of the same foods as the family.

Dad

Yeah.

Tamariki Ora nurse

That's great. And he's getting involved with his food, isn't he?

Dad

Yeah. The thing is he was picking things up and putting them in his mouth long before he was ever given solids to eat so ...

Tamariki Ora nurse

Right, that's good.

Dad

It's kind of like just a continuation of what he'd already been doing.

Mum 2

Yeah ... baby loves them too eh?

Mum 3 Yes.

[Music]

Mum 3

Fabulous.

Mum 2

Oh, yummy.

Mum 3

I don't add any sugar in it, um, I find that fruit and vegetables already have enough natural sugar in them, and I'm really mindful that I don't want to set her up for ...

Mum 3

... future of ...

[Baby grizzling noises]

Mum 3

... unnecessary sugar intake and whatnot.

Mum 2

Yeah, yeah.

Mum 3

... so I just want to keep it as natural as ...

Remember to give your baby iron-rich foods such as iron-fortified baby cereal and/or meat.

Mum 4

Looks a bit dry.

[Sound of blender stick]

[Laughter]

Mum 4

I save a bit of the water from the vegetables that we've used to cook the vegetables in just to help mash it up a bit better.

[Music]

Mum 2

Yeah that looks good.
